The mats produced by screw pine has a significant role in the traditional customs of Kerala.

One of the main activities of the villagers is shell mining as there is an abundance of black clam (Villorita cyprinoides) in the backwaters of vembanad lake. The villagers, mostly women and men, stand knee-deep in water and pick the shells from the water bed. The clams to be processed are put in large aluminum tubs with some water obtained from the edge of the shore. The clams are boiled for about 45 minutes. While being cooked, the clam meats become loose from their shells.

Toddy is the indigenous Kerala beverage extracted from the inflorescence of the coconut tree. Tourists could, on request, be taken to see toddy tappers extracting sap by incising the inflorescent stalk using a special knife that they carry on a hand-made, natural waist belt.
