Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary:  (10 Kms from VaikomOpen 0600 – 1800 brs)
Located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake, the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, an ornithologist’s Paradise, is a favourite haunt of migratory birds, June to August is the breeding season of resident wetland birds like Siberian stork, cormorants, darter, white ibis, egret, darter, heron and teal, Between November and May is the season of migratory birds like pintailed duck, garganey teal, spot billed duck, osprey, marsh harrier, steppey eagle etc. A cruise along the Vembanad Lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary. Pathiramanal, an enchanting island on the lake, can be accessed by boat from here.

Watch birds of a different feather flock together:
Spot the Siberian stork, egrets, herons, darters, teals and hundreds of other feathered visitors from across the world at the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Hear them sing. Take their family photograph. And applaud their aerobatic skills.

Thaneermukkom Bundu  (10 K.m from vaikom)
This salt water barrier built across Vembanad lake, is one of the largest mud regulators in India, and prevents the intrusion of salt water into lower kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala

Sand mining, shell mining, toddy tapping and fishing are the traditional occupations of villagers in Ithipuzha & Murinjapuzha. Banana and Tapioca cultivation are done abundantly here.  Tourists enjoy backwater cruise, walk around the banana plantations and adore the beauty of these pristine villages.

PILGRIM CENTRES IN AND AROUND VAIKOM
Malliyoor Mahaganapathy Temple,Malliyoor ( 21 km South of Vaikom)

The Malliyoor Sree MahaGanapathy Temple is in comparable in the conception of the presiding deity as Vaishnava Ganapathy, with a young Sree Krishna seated on the lap of Lord Ganesha. This unique and powerful infusion of the Vaishnava spirit in the Ganesha idol is the supreme achievement of the devoted penance of the much-revered main priest of the temple, Brahmasree Bhagavathahamsam Malliyoor Sankaran Nampoothiri.

Mahadevar Temple, Ettumanoor: (25 Km South of Vaikom)

This temple is famous for its murals, especially the paintint of Nataraja in the gopuram and ezharaponnana (the 7 ½ elephants finished in gold). Festival: Ezharaponnana ezhunallathu (10 days in February / March)

Surya Temple, Adityapuram: ( km South of Vaikom)

The only temple in Kerala dedicated to Aditya, the sun god. The first and last Sundays of zodiacs scorpio ( November –December) and Ariea (April-May) are considered auspicious.

Saint Alphonsa Muttathupadathu : ( Km South of Vaikom)

Alphonsa dell’Immacolata Concezione; 19 August 1910 – 28 July 1946) is a Catholic Saint, the second person of Indian origin to be canonized as a saint by the Church and the first canonized saint of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic Church.

Chottanikkara Temple ( Km north of Vaikom)

Chottanikkara is an important centre of Hindu pilgrimage in eranakulam District.it is a village .The place is famous through which attracts of India. This temple enshrines goddess Bhagavathi in three revered forms.as saraswathi in the morning ,draped in white ; Bhadrakali at noon ,dressed in crimson; and durga in the evening decked up in blue.

Thazhathangady Juma Masjid :

Thazhathangady Juma Masjid or Taj Juma Masjid situated at Thazhathangady is considered as one of the heritage zones in Kerala. This mosque, on the banks of the enticing Meenachil River, is more than 1000 years old and is noted for its intricate wooden carvings and richness of traditional beauty.

St. Marrys Church, Vechoor

Infant Jesus Church, The 1015 year old church has long history connected with Syrian Christians. Once the administrative headquarters of Syrian Christians was in Kodungalloor., depite of King Tipu’s invasion, it was shifted to Vadayar. A small piece of wood from the remains of the holy cross in which Christ crucified was received from Pope Pius VI is placed on the altar of the Church

Synod of Diamper or Udayamperoor Sunnahados: This diocesan council was held in the church of Diamper (Udayamperoor) from June 20 to 26, 1599. Latin usages started getting formally adopted & used by Christians in Kerala after Udayamperoor Sunnahados. Convened on June 20, 1599 this council was held under the divine guidance of Aleixo de Menezes, Archbishop of Goa to liberate the eastern Churches from the control of Pope. The ancient church of Diamper (Udayamperoor) thus holds a very important place in the history and hence thousands of tourists visit this shire every year.

St. Joseph‘s Forane Church, Vaikom:

This is one among the oldest Roman Syrian Catholic Churches in Kerala & contains very ancient and rare architecture. This church is situated near the bank of Vembanad Lake Adithyapuram Temple: Adityapuram, a small village located about 2Km from Muttachira is famous for the sun temple situated here. A large number of devotees flock to the temple every year, during Sundays of the zodiacs Scorpio (November- December) and Aries (April – May).

Kanjiramattom Mosque (18 km from Cochin):

It is said that this mosque stands above the mortal remains of the famous Muslim saint Sheikh Farid. This mosque has still retained its antique beauty. During the annual Chandanakudam Festival pilgrims carry pots covered with sandalwood paste in a procession to the mosque honoring Sheikh Fariduddin. Watching this procession is a wonderful experience. Ameda temple: Ameda Temple, consecrated by Parasurama, is gracefully located on the banks of Vembanad Lake. This ancient temple is about 20Kms south of Ernakulam, dedicated to Sapthamathrukkal (Veerabhadran, Ganapathy, Brahmani, Maheshwari, Kowmari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani and Chamundi). Ameda temple also has shrines dedicated to Nagaraja, Nagayakshi and Lord Vishnu.

Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple, Tripunithura:

Lord Vishnu as Santhana Gopala Moorthy showers blessings on everyone at Sree Poornathrayeesa Temple, about 10Km south-east of Cochin. Santhana Gopala Moorthy which literally means “savior of infants” is believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. ‘Vrishchikoltsawam, the main festival of the temple, is conduct every year in the month of Vrishchikam (Nov-Dec). Other cultural festival like Athachamayam also attracts a lot of tourists from far and wide.

Vaikom Shiva Temple:

This is one of the oldest and famous Siva temples in Kerala. Thousands of devotees throng to the temple throughout the year. The history of this temple is connected with the legendary Parasurama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.

One of the most respected shrines of Lord Shiva, Vaikom Shiva Temple is popularly known as Kasi of South. It is believed that if a devotee visits and prays at Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, Kaduthuruthy Thaliyil Mahadeva Temple and Ettumanoor Mahadeva Temple on the same day, before ‘Ucha Pooja’ (the noon pooja), his wish will be fulfilled by Lord Shiva.

This is one among the biggest temples in Kerala, with a vast courtyard of about 8 acres. The four huge pillars or ‘Gopuras’ of this temple are adorned with attractive images of epic characters from the Hindu mythology. The inner structures and main inner yard called ‘Sreekovil’ of the temple are classic examples of traditional Kerala architecture.

Although Vaikathashtami is the important festival at the temple, there are many other many other smaller festivals too; some of them very unique and worth seeing. Vaikom Shiva Temple hosts a popular ‘Vaikathashtami’ festival during the lunar fortnight of Malayalam month Vrischikam (November/December).

Elephant pageants, traditional art performances and annual Vaikathashtami festival are the main the attractions related to Vaikom Mahadeva Temple. On the final day of Vaikathashtami, the deities of the neighboring temples are ceremoniously brought to Vaikom Mahadeva Temple.

Prathal in Vaikom Shiva Temple – Holy ‘Prathal’ (mid day food offering) of Vaikom Shiva Temple is very famous. Mid day food is offered to devotees, after the daily prayers. It is believed that those who eat this meal will be redeemed from their sins.

Vaikom Satyagraha Museum

Vaikom Satyagraha was a movement in Travancore to abolish the untouchability among Hindus. Vaikom has an important place in the history of India due to the famous Vaikom Satyagraha against untouchability. It was here that Mahatma Gandhi, EV Ramaswamy, T.K.Madhavan,Mannath Padmanabhan took part in the epic movement to abolish untouchability. This museum can tell the visitors a lot about the entire saga of revolt against untouchability that existed in Kerala.

Hill Palace Museum, Tripunithura 25 Km from Vaikom

Open 0900-1230Hrs 1400-1630 Hrs. Closed on Mondays) The Oficial residence of the erstwhile Kochi royal family, was built in 1865 .the palace complex consists of the erstwhile Kochi royal family ,was built in 1865.the palace complex consists of 49 buildings in the traditional architectural style of Kerala and is surrounded by 52 acres of traced land with a deer park and facilities for horse riding .A full fledged ethno archeological museums and Keralas first ever heritage museums are the main attractions. Displayed inside the thirteen galleries are oil painting, 19th century painting, murals, sculptures in stone and plaster of Paris, manuscripts, inscriptions and coins belonging to the royal family. Ancient musical instruments, clay models, bronze and silver items from the 14th, 15th and 16th century are some of the others exhibited

As you drive about 40 km from kochi towards Alappuzha, a narrow road branching off from NH 47 leads to the strikingly charming village of mararikkulam and its serene beach. Even if your destination is the beach , the few kilometers drive along this road offers glimpses into the life of the local fisherflok .The modest houses have either thatched or tiled roofs .Small teashops and grocery stores are clustered around street corners .Traditional places of worship draw a stream of devotees and fishmongers go house to house with the days catch in baskets perched on their heads. Cyclists unhurriedly pedal to their business.
